9/10 – Review by Susanne Sinmara
Very very eagerly awaited was this album by Finland’s Blackened Death band ARCHGOAT. It’s been 6 years since their last album, The Light-Devouring Darkness, and it was about time they got their ass in gear and release something new for the trve kvlt fans. They have never really excited me too much – maybe because I simply haven’t really listened properly to their albums, which shall now be rectified. In this day and age, when Blackened Death like Archgoat make is rather trendy and kvlt, it’s no mean feat to put an album out that still manages to convince and excite. Maybe that’s because they are spearleaders in this kind of music, and maybe because they also took such a long time to bring this album out.
It crunches, it rumbles (can you tell it was produced by Satanic Warmaster/Werewolf? He certainly put his mark on this album.) The drums especially – there is much use of the toms, which gives the album a great organic sound. There’s also plenty of fun to be had with titles like ‘Nuns, Cunts & Darkness’, ‘Phallic Desecrator of Sacred G…’, ‘Sado Magical Portal’ ‘Congregation of Cirumcised’ – but the main draw are the riffs and the pounding drums.
Cleverly mixed, there’s some true gems on this album. They don’t shy away from using samples or background choirs and this makes listening to this album so much fun. There’s no fuss, it’s just pure, stonking satanic fun. With the emphasis on Satanic.
They are touring through Europe this year with Inquisition, Ondskapt and Blackdeath. I’m going to interview them at their London gig on the 29th of January 2015, so watch out for this.
