German black doom duo Schwarzer Abt have unveiled their debut EP, Monolith! Sporting a lo-fi production value, sleazy black metal vocals and a dense thudding drumming style, Monolith certainly catches your attention and when mixed with cleaner, more traditional doom vocals is definitely trying to blend two contrasting styles that don’t necessarily fit well together! Black metal and funeral doom, or death doom, yes! Black metal and traditional doom? Now that is an odd combination!

In terms of creativity I’d give this duo a decent thumbs up as they try to fuse their sound with melodic acoustic passages, sound clips of nature, dual vocal styles and plenty of melody! At the same time though Monolith does feel a little bland and tame, at least for my tastes!

In places things are down right laboured and ill timed and whilst the band get the darkness aspect of things right, little else falls into place! Its a hard album to enjoy and one I’d avoid!
