REQUIEM FOR OBLIVION | EP 13 [US PROGRESSIVE DEATH METAL] REVIEW BY LUKE HAYHURST

REQUIEM FOR OBLIVION are an American progressive death metal band hailing from Erie, PA.

I suppose their location is apt considering the murky nature of their artwork. Currently unsigned, the bands second release comes on the back of their debut EP in 2011 and consists of four tracks, one of which is more of a short instrumental interlude.

This is very much a case of the good, the bad and the ugly! I’ll start with the bad… the overly widdly and guitar wankery sections of opening song DEMON DRUG which sounds like CANNIBAL CORPSES track HAMMER SMASHED FACE has gone on a vegetarian diet. The ugly is the bands timing when they try and be too technical and fit too much in.

Ah but for the good… extremely well thought out ideas, some extremely catchy chugging riffs in DEMON DRUG, the impressive guitar based atmosphere they create during instrumental track AETHOS and the last two tracks HUMAN STAIN and THE HALLOWED which see the band use a slow, intense sound with cleaner more haunting vocals and an intense, bleak atmosphere!

Truly a band with great potential on the evidence of this!
