Hamburg based death/crust band Instinct of Survival released “North of Nowhere” back in 2009.
Opening with “Human?” things start with a moderately paced build up before exploding out in a tidal wave of super fast and aggressive drumming, crusty violent vocals and grinding riffs! Furious old school thrash solos that hint at early era Sepultura and a vocal style that gives nods to Motorhead with its rough and ready style as well as other more prominent death metal bands, gives Instinct of Survival a true metal heritage vibe, the aura of a band who recognize their heroes and are not afraid to call upon their influence if need be.
Tracks such as “Old, Lonely, Embittered” have a truly raw echoing quality to them and in slower more reflective moments the cold icy fingers of a black metal influence to the riffs. Using sublime solos and a rampaging, crushing forward momentum the crust element really comes to the surface in fine abrasive form!
“North of Nowhere” may be nearly five years old but its relevance is as strong as ever and the power and filthy moods it exudes are still fresh!
