VESTERIAN | ANTHEMS FOR THE COMING WAR AGE [US BLACK METAL] REVIEW BY LUKE HAYHURST

Another addition to the ever growing USBM is Vesterian, formed from the ashes of Centurion all the way back in 1996.

Not the most prolific of bands, the last seventeen years have seen only three demo releases but now the stars have aligned and the time is right for the bands debut full length album, superbly entitled “Anthems for the Coming War Age” released through Glorious North Productions.

At first glance as opening track (Besides the intro) “Under the Red Moon” things appear to be pretty standard black metal fare, fast hate fueled riffs with destructive blast beats and raw guttural vocals. Yet wait a little and the more melodic/atmospheric meanderings and wanderings will surely come to you.

As if to prove just that point, and to demonstrate the bands many musical layers and textures, “Ancient Bloodthirst” is by far one of the albums more intense and passionate tracks, meshing sheer brutality with an eerie sinister vibe and some wonderful grinding riff based melodies throughout. Overall it has a very modern day feel to it as many a black metal band are now producing and Vesterian are certainly of a very high quality.

As album this is impressive, as a debut album it shows a bright future, if they can keep producing albums of this quality!
