8/10 – LUKE HAYHURST
US death grinders Scalpel have returned with with their debut full length album entitled “Sorrow & Skin”, their first release since their 2010 EP “Common Threads”.
The opening to “Ripe” is one of the most furious and maniacal intro’s you are ever likely to hear, a cacophony of noise, destruction and aggression exploding out of your speakers before Scalpel settle things down, somewhat, into a fast paced brutal bashing of thundering drumming, massive riffs, the odd winding solo and throat searing vocals! The drumming display in particular of worth special mention, the apocalyptic double bass and super fast strokes really bring this album alive and give it a firm solid back bone. In quieter interludes the bass work is key and executed well and at all other times the vicious pummeling that is rained down upon the populace is of a level not seen since Sodom and Gammorah!
As things progress so does the blood soaked carnage that is the Scalpel sound! Often catchy, always dangerously loud and skull splittingly violent, Scalpel really take a pause for thought and prefer to keep their mesmerizing break neck pace at full tilt throughout. If you like death/grind then this is right up your street, perfectly executed and wielded like the chainsaw in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, uncaring, malevolent and deadly!
