FRENCH FUNERAL/DEATH DOOM METAL
9/10 – LUKE HAYHURST
French funeral/death metal band Ataraxie have returned with their third full length album “Le E’tre Et La Nausee” and further more continue their relationship with Japanese label Weird Truth Productions. As you’d expect with a band of Ataraxie’s caliber and style things start slowly and get slower, a deep almost physical record of attrition as harsh growls cry out depressingly over the heads of furious monolithic riff-age and drumming, and all the while a huge aura of foreboding is cast high over proceedings. This album is a marathon rather than a sprint, a lengthy endurance ordeal that will test even the most seasoned of listeners and featuring only a handful of faster paced moments.
Despite the grating, grinding abrasive nature of Ataraxie they do let loose some thoroughly catchy chugging riffs that temper the sullen feel to the record rather well. For the rest of this expansive epic though Ataraxie come across as anguished, desperate and deeply troubled, their melancholy overflowing into out right misery and depression on a regular basis! Then again what do you expect from one of the best bands in this genre? A quality album from start to finish, their best yet… passionate, emotional, brutally heavy and often devastating!
