RUSSIAN BLACK/DEATH METAL
5/10 – LUKE HAYHURST
The very first thing to greet you on The Unhallowed’s new album “Chaingenesis” is the stunning artwork, quite superb. This is the Russian bands sophomore release and comes to us through Wormholedeath.
Now if you looked on the Metal Archives page for The Unhallowed you would be told that this is a Russian black/death metal act. Where? I cannot hear that at all. The Unhallowed play generic metal with the odd acoustic or melodic interlude, a dual vocal approach of growled vocals and clean female vocals and if I’m honest a fairly decent sense of song craft. Beautiful are the clean vocals of Polina Larson, deep and guttural the grunts and growls of Paul Wicker, and the almost jazz like flow of some of the music on display I’d say plants The Unhallowed firmly in a Gothic/Progressive metal category… this has never been black/death metal, barring the odd glimpse of slightly more violent riff-age.
It isn’t my cup of tea if I’m honest but the band do have a decent sound, even if their flow is often disjointed.
