COSTA RICAN BLACK METAL
7/10 – LUKE HAYHURST
Black metal from Costa Rica anyone? It seems to be a happening place for darkened metal as even Deiphago have re-located there. Falgar is a one man black project by Costa Rican native Etienne Goldberg and “La Dama Del Alba” is his third full length album and his first since 2010.
I would imagine that being a metalhead in Costa Rica despite one or two class acts is a lonely business and the Falgar sound drips and oozes solitary desperation, isolation and cold hard times in the past and ahead. Longing for something better but just out of reach feels like the mood being created yet viewed upon with a philosophical mind.
Musically you can tell that Falgar is a one man affair yet it remains enjoyable and endearing. It is slow and lumbering, drenched in the traditional black metal sounds although with an occasional medieval feel to it, artwork and music combined! Raw screeched vocals combines with more haunting tones, cold riffs methodically stalk the gloom and from start to finish the album reeks of black metal fury played in the old school way! Well worth a listen then and not hard to see why Nebular Winter Productions chose this to be their debut release!
