DEATH METAL | GAMLEBY/ SWEDEN
RELEASED 07.09.2012 BY F.D.A REKOTZ
From one of the true Death Metal heart lands of Sweden comes REVOLTING and their fourth full length studio album sublimely and enticingly named ‘Hymns Of Ghastly Horror’. Now in my opinion there is always room for horror movie based Death Metal so when a band like Revolting comes along who so proudly endorse Death Metal solely focused on 1980’s horror films you know I’m going to give them a damn good listen!
Sporting a ceaseless pace Revolting batter through this album like their lives depended on it and whilst the accuracy of their flowing style mixed with some technically gifted guitar solos is of a crisp fresh sounding nature, their all out one directional assault can become a little stagnant. Indeed it isn’t until half way through ‘Ravenous Alien Spawn’ that you hear any let up from the onslaught at all and only then in the form of a short slightly more sadistic and slower interlude. That being said the recording quality on ‘Hymns Of Ghastly Horror’ is superb and the technicality and musicianship cannot be faulted at all. Still I do find myself wishing that the band had more diversity to them rather than just an all out attack of fast paced aggressive Death Metal. It’s more than competently played by a band who obviously has talent but it likes direction and creativity and this needs to be addressed. To end on a high though, in places this is just out right skull crushingly heavy! [6/10 – LUKE HAYHURST]
