SLUDGE DOOM METAL | PLY MOUTH/ UK
SELF RELEASED ON 30.07.2012
In both name and sound the brand new debut studio album “Hell Is Empty And All The Devils Are Here” from English female fronted Sludge Doom Metal five piece ISHMAEL is a tantalizing prospect, the right blend of darkness, religious overtones and sinister intentions. I am truly excited about this release.
So enter stage Ishmael, a band disillusioned with the world around them and the society they are forced to be a part of! A band who feel debased being forced to interact with the rest of the unwashed masses and who feel despair at the prospect of it, and of the future downward spiral that people will inevitably lead us all down! “Hell Is Empty And All The Devils Are Here”… an album that when you look at Ishmael’s view of the world sounds more like a fervent prayer than an album name!
Comprised of only three songs, “Hell Is Empty And All The Devils Are Here” still weights in at a truly heavyweight thirty five minutes, give or take a few seconds, yet each track is packed to the rafters with a deep seated hatred, a bleak unending bitterness at the world and civilisation that we are manacled too, that we all must endure! Starting with the smile inducing and sarcastic sounding “Buried With Fingers Crossed”, Ishmael begin slowly with a child like prayer before a stream of what sounds like religious zealotry and bile fills the air like a pollutant or static. This vitriol is only ended by something far more oppressive and sinister, the down tuned crushing nature of Ishmael’s riffs and the darkened dominance of vocalist Dani Hawkin’s tortured screaming voice!
“Hell Is Empty And All The Devils Are Here” is a truly nerve wracking torturous album, methodical in it’s approach to total destruction, menacing in its intent and with an end result of pure evil! As far as I can see the only devils that are currently amongst us are the five members of Ishmael themselves!! [9/10 – LUKE HAYHURST]
